According to many, Istria is a region that is, along with Dubrovnik, the most developed tourism area in Croatia. Dinopark is located in Funtana, a former small fishing village and today a famous tourist destination in Istria. It is a fun theme park in which visitors can see life size replicas of dinoaurs. ‘La Grisa’ hotel recently opened in the old town core of Bale, a small Istrian town close to Rovinj and Pula. The hotel was constructed by the renovation and joining up of three old buildings into one. The houses share a garden which will be turned into a terrace adjecant to the hotel restaurant. The magazine National Geographic has recently recommended Istria as one of the ten most attractive tourist destinations in the world, for a summer holiday in 2011. The Istrian cape Kamenjak has recently been listed among the ten most desirable and interesting hidden beaches of the Mediterranean, according to The Lonely Planet, one of the most influential tour guides in the world.

The lighthouse Porer situated on an island near the extreme south of Istria was last year included in the park of miniature buildings, Minimundus, in Austria near Klagenfurt. The park officials chose Porer because it is, they say, a familiar sight from Croatia. The model of the lighthouse was built in their workshop. 4000 pieces of limestone bricks were used and the construction lasted for half a year.

The prestige world magazine CNN Traveller has recently introduced Istria to almost one million of its readers from 60 countries. The editorial staff of the German edition of Diners Club Magazine awarded Istria a high second place in its traditional Diners Club Magazine Award competition, in the category of “the most beautiful tourist regions of Europe”. Istria competed with 16 other finalists, among which were well known destinations such as Cote d’Azur, Tuscany and Andalusia.

In the big survey carried out by the German Auto-Moto Club ADAC, among German tourists who travel on holiday in their personal vehicles Istria came first in the category of the most favourite tourist regions. The construction of an exclusive five-star hotel Zlatni Prsten with 84 beds should soon begin in the tourist village Zelena Laguna. It is a foreign investment stretching over about 10 000 square meters of land on the territory of Funtana, close to the border with Poreč. This will be the first five-star hotel in Poreč.
